World-class amateur assault on Emirates Australian Open

A world-class amateur assault will launch at next month’s Emirates Australian Open.

A world-class amateur assault will launch at next month’s Emirates Australian Open.

""Three of the world’s top 14 amateur golfers, including Australian Ryan Ruffels, will bid to become the first amateur since Aaron Baddeley in 1999 to hoist the Stonehaven Cup, and just the third after Bruce Devlin in 1960 since World War II.

Ruffels, ranked No.8, will join outstanding American pair Bryson DeChambeau (No.6) and Jordan Niebrugge (No.14) at The Australian Golf Club from November 26-29.

And joining this pair will be Ruffels’ fellow Golf Australia national squad member Brett Coletta, the medallist at the recent US Amateur as winner of the strokeplay phase.

The quartet will compete against an elite professional field containing world No.2 and defending champion Jordan Spieth and fellow former rankings-toppers Adam Scott and Lee Westwood, both of whom are also past winners.

A host of other former Australian Open champions has already confirmed, including John Senden, Greg Chalmers and Geoff Ogilvy, while 2011 Open Championship winner Darren Clarke is also locked in, as are Presidents Cup stars Marc Leishman and Steve Bowditch.

DeChambeau is coming off victories at the US Amateur and NCAA Championship, becoming just the fifth player on an elite list – Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Ryan Moore – to have done so in the same year.

Niebrugge was low amateur in a stellar class at The Open at St Andrews this year. The Oklahoma State student was within three of the lead during the manic back nine in July, and his eventual T6 finish has already booked him a berth for the 2016 Open at Royal Troon.

Ruffels, recently joint runner-up at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship with fellow Australian Cam Davis, said the Americans were quality golfers.

"They won’t be as well known here yet, but those guys are really well respected in the amateur game. Their achievements this year were incredible," Ruffels said.

"The race for low am will be hot, but there’s nothing to stop any of us winning overall. The amateurs are a lot better prepared these days to play against the pros and won’t be intimidated by the occasion or back away from it.

"I wouldn’t be surprised to see amateur contend or even win."

Davis, the Australian Amateur champion at the same course earlier this year, will not be playing the Open after season-ending wrist surgery.

The full amateur contingent is yet to be finalised.

The 2015 Emirates Australian Open, the 100th staging of the national championship, will be played at The Australian Golf Club from November 26-29.

The Emirates Australian Open is a flagship tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia. The winner will receive a minimum of 32 Official World Golf Ranking points.

The event will be telecast for all four days on Channel 7.

Tickets are on sale now from Ticketek.
