The 2017 Inside Golf NSW/ACT PGA Trainee Match Play Championship has been run and won, with Concord Golf Club second year PGA Trainee Professional, Jordan Widdicombe prevailing over Ryde Parramatta third year PGA Trainee Professional, Trent Smith 8&7 in the final.
Widdicombe was the top seed of the 21 participants courtesy of holding top spot on the NSW/ACT PGA Trainee Order of Merit when the event began back in June.
He lived up his number one seeding, breezing through the early rounds then comfortably defeating Twin Creeks PGA Trainee Professional, Jarrad Santi 5&3 in his semi-final before saving his most dominant performance until last against Smith.
Widdicombe’s stellar 2017 form also includes another three trainee match wins, a runner-up finish in the NSW/ACT PGA Trainee Championship and top spot in the current NSW/ACT PGA Trainee Order of Merit Standings.
When asked what the key has been to his consistent play this year Widdicombe stated, “I have putted really well all year. I have a lot of trust in my putting and it has saved me on more than one occasion when my ball striking hasn’t been at its best.
“I thoroughly enjoy putting my game under pressure in a match play environment and am extremely happy to take the title this year after losing to Robbie Hogan in the Quarter-Finals last year.
“Thanks also to Inside Golf for their sponsorship of this event, the trainees are very appreciative of their support!"
The NSW/ACT PGA Trainee event schedule concludes on October 30, with the final match being played at Monash Country Club.
