From Kalgoorlie to Royal Fremantle Golf Club, the PGA Tour of Australasia has travelled into the city from the desert for the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open.
Not long by modern day standards the Royal Fremantle layout is
still a tough test of golf due to the defence provided by the strong wind,
colloquially called the Fremantle Doctor, which arrives around lunchtime each
day.
The last time the WA
Open was played at Royal Fremantle was in 2011 when Rohan
Blizard won the title with a tournament total 10-under 278. He is in the field
again this year.
Also teeing it up in Freo is last week’s WA PGA Champion
Brett Rumford. He will be aiming for back-to-back victories for the second time
in his career after he achieved the feat in 2013 on the European Tour.
Amateur Min Woo Lee, who is the WA Amateur Champion, was
impressive in Kalgoorlie last week before signing for an incorrect scorecard on
Sunday saw him unfortunately disqualified.
He will be able to make up for it this week as he is back in
action chasing his State Open title on his home course.
Lee will be aiming to be the first amateur to win the WA
Open since 2012 when Oliver Goss, a fellow Royal Fremantle member, won the
title at Royal Perth.
Unfortunately Ryan Fox will not be back to defend his title.
Since he won his first Professional title at the WA Open in 2014 he has gone
from strength to strength with his game.
He quickly recorded his second victory at the Queensland PGA
Championship in February before jetting off to the European Challenge Tour
where he added another victory to his resume in France.
Fox also qualified for The Open this year where he made the
cut.
This week he will be playing in the European Challenge
Tour’s season ending tournament where a good result will cement his European
Tour card for 2016.
The Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open will tee off on Thursday 5th
November with the champion decided on Sunday 8th November.
Along with the winner’s share of the $100,000 prize purse
the champion will earn status on the PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of
2017 and Official World Golf Ranking points.
