Tough day for Hend and BMW contenders

Scott Hend won’t make any excuses after
failing to convert a one shot lead Sunday at the BMW PGA Championship at
Wentworth but he wasn’t the only title contender to falter.

"ScottHend took a one shot lead through 54 holes
after three brilliant days of golf but lost momentum with a double bogey at the
first hole of the day before dropping four more shots on the way to the turn.

An eventual 78 dropped Hend down the
standings but on a day when just six players broke 70, and four failed to break
80, even small mistakes were magnified and that proved costly for the
Australian.

His final round playing partner Tyrrell
Hatton also struggled, signing for a 75, one shot better than former world
number one Lee Westwood who posted 76 after starting the day in third position.

Only two of the top-10 players on the
leaderboard at the end of Saturday’s play broke par on Sunday.

Eventual winner Chris Wood shot a 3-under
60 thanks to a front nine 29 while Masters champion Danny Willett moved up
seven places on the leaderboard after a 1-under 71.

Hend eventually finished T15 at 3-under for
the week, four shots better than Australian PGA champion Nathan Holman in T37.

Holman played steady golf over the course
of the week and finished in style with an eagle three to thrill the crowds at
the 72nd hole of the tournament.

Richard Green was one shot further back and
T43 after rounds of 67-73-76-74 with Andrew Dodt another stroke behind and T47.

Dodt will be pleased with his efforts this
week after struggling in the final two rounds in Mauritius a fortnight ago then
missing the cut at last week’s Irish Open.

Marcus Fraser, Jason Scrivener and Brett
Rumford all had poor first rounds and missed the weekend’s play.
