Gusting winds in the opening round of the St Georges Basin Legends Pro-Am weren’t able to stop Steve Conran from getting the hot start he needed to win in New South Wales.
A first round of 5-under 65 set Conran up for an impressive 9-under two-round total to claim a one-shot victory at St Georges Basin Country Club.
A number of challengers presented in the final round but Conran was able to remain steady, crediting his mental strength for a second scorecard of 4-under 66.
“When I played some holes here on Monday I felt the course was really suited to my game,” Conran said.
“Just because a course sets up well for you doesn’t always mean you play well so I’m really glad I got the job done.”
Identical rounds of 67, 65 from Michael Harwood, Shaquill Mongol and John Onions saw the trio tie for second place at 8-under the card.
Brad Burns, Richard Gilkey, Grant Kenny and Allan May highlighted the level of competition on the Ladbrokes Legends Tour to finish T5 at 4-under.
A further five players including Peter Senior, Glenn Joyner and Terry Price tied for ninth place at 3-under 137.
The Ladbrokes Legends Tour will next tee it up at the Worrigee Links Legends Pro-Am.

Tinkler arrived at St Georges Basin in great form having registered victories in his previous two starts at Bermagui and Club Catalina, and maintained this to overcome some strong challengers for the title.
Rob Willis finished some 90 minutes prior to the leading groups with an amazing final round of 63, and for a while appeared to have snatched the title from the overnight contenders before Tinkler birdied the final hole to win by a stroke.
Third place on 134 was shared between Andy Rogers who carded a second round of 5-under par 65, and Craig Warren who commenced his final round with a hole in one at the 117 metre par-3 opening hole.
Glenn Joyner and Brad Burns were a further stroke back sharing 5th place on 135. In total 20 players finished under par for the event which demonstrates the level of talent on the Ladbrokes Legends Tour.
The Ladbrokes Legends Tour now moves to the Mollymook Golf Club (Hilltop Course) for the NSW PGA Seniors Championship commencing Friday.

Elliott had a fast start requiring only 30 strokes for the first nine, with Burns closing his round with an eagle-3 on the 516-metre par-5 finishing hole.
Lucien Tinkler continues his current great form seeking a hat-trick of wins, and Glenn Joyner are in close pursuit with 66, Joyner firing three birdies in his last 4 holes. David Diaz, Mike Harwood and Nigel Lane share fourth place a further shot adrift on 67.
Scoring was impressive given the amount of recent rain making the course quite heavy, along with the windy conditions testing the field for most of the day.
It will be an interesting final round today with 24 players within 5 strokes of the leaders, play is underway.
