The Nelson Bay golf course would prove to be no pushover on day one of the 2018 Nelson Bay Pro-Am.

""With tree-lined fairways it was crucial to keep the ball in play and with damp conditions the course would play substantially longer.

The experienced Matthew Millar and rookie Hayden Webb shared the lead heading into the final round with fine rounds of 3-under 69.

The final day saw perfect conditions for players and a chance for someone to come out of the pack with a low score and take the title.

As expected players made their move with the Nelson Bay course record being broken by Darren Beck and Jamie Hook who shot 6-under 66.

But even course records wouldn’t deny the ever consistent Millar who shot another 3-under 69, matching his day one score.

Millar’s 69, 69 6-under 138 total was good enough for a one-shot victory. A great effort given Millar had never played the golf course before Thursday.

“It’s my first time up here and I’m very impressed with the golf course. I’d like to thank everyone involved in the event it was a great couple of days and I’m really happy I came up to play," said Millar.

Darren Beck found himself in the runner-up position as he did at Port Macquarie a week ago. Beck finished with 5-under 139 total which included his final round course record 6-under 66.

Jamie Hook who also shot a course record 6-under 66 in the final round found himself in third with a 4-under 140 total.

The consistent Matthew Stieger finished fourth with a 71, 70 3-under 141 total and is hoping to gain a start in the Taiwan Masters next week.

Rounding out the top five was Ben Clementson and Tim Hart with 2-under 142 totals.

The NSW/ACT swing of the Ladbrokes Pro-Am Series will tee it up next at the Lake Macquarie Pro Am at Belmont Golf Club on Monday.
