Scott Strange was a man on fire at 13th BeachGolf Links this morning, setting a cracking pace at the Oates Vic Open.

"ScottPlaying the creek course early in the morning, Strange found his first birdie of his second hole of the day at the par-4 11th.

From there it was like the perfect round, he seemed a man unstoppable particularly with the putter as he came through the turn at 6-under the card.

"I just kept it in play today. But I felt like I was 15 again with the putter, I was holing everything," said Strange.

"I said to the guys, this is ridiculous – I was looking at 30-footers and they were just going in centre cup."

"It was windy and difficult, but any day you’re doing that you’re going to shoot a number and today I just managed to roll some putts in."

While the tournament was buzzing with the magical number 59, it wasn’t a realistic thought that Strange entertained.

"Not really, I was just playing, we were having a bit of a chat and a good old time," said Strange when questioned about the prospect of a 59.

"I had holes 3-4-5 (that are tough) and 6 is a tucked pin and you can’t get to that. I knew I had 7 and 9 when I could get something back, but you’re not really thinking about it until you get to those holes."

Coming to his final hole of the day, Strange was 10-under the card and looked likely of setting a new course record.

However he faltered for the first time, hitting his drive dead into the fairway bunker he managed to get into onto the green and give himself a par putt opportunity which he unfortunately missed.

Strange now finds himself in a good position heading into the rest of the tournament, he is 9-under the card and leading by four shots.

"I haven’t shot 9-under in a long time. It’s nice to actually get it going," added Strange.

"When you play a lot of tough golf courses all the time, you forget how to score and make a lot of birdies. So when you get the chance, it’s nice."
