Peter Martin and Lindsay Wilson lead in Papua New Guinea
following the morning field of the second round.
Starting the day on 4-under the card and two shots off the
lead, Wilson found his rhythm on the back-9 to finish his round on 3-under 69.
"I just played some solid golf; I didn’t make too many
mistakes and surprisingly made a few putts which helps here," said Wilson.
"I came home pretty strong, I was only even par through 12
holes and then made birdies at 13, 14, 15 and 17 so that was a good way to
finish and top off my round."
Tour rookie Wilson, who swapped a snowboard for a golf club,
has found himself in a share of the lead in just his sixth tournament.
"I was a good junior golfer but then I left to go to Canada
for seven years and barely picked up a club. I only started getting back into
it in August last year and it’s all naturally coming back," added Wilson.
"I was working on the ski fields, just snowboarding and
living in Whistler. It was great fun but I got to 27-years-old and if I am
going to give golf a shot it had to be now."
While Wilson doesn’t think his score will stand up at the
end of the day, he does believe he has uncovered the secret to the Royal Port
Moresby Golf Club greens.
"I think that the guys who had good scores yesterday have
the ability to shoot 3 or 4-under today. I will be happy if I am two off the
lead," added Wilson.
"Tomorrow I will do what you normally try not to and hit it
above the hole."
"It seems like the downhill putts are the way to go out
here. The greens are slow so uphill you just have to hit it so firm, the
downhill ones actually roll quite well."
Joining Wilson in the lead on 7-under the card is Peter
Martin who played a steady round of golf today to shoot 5-under the card.
"I played quite solid today; I never looked like doing
anything wrong. It was a stress free round which was nice," said Martin, who
recorded the best score of the morning.
"I just controlled my ball really well today. I probably hit
16 greens in regulation so that helps around the courses in the islands."
Overnight leader Brad Moules found his putter cold this morning
and while happy with his play was only able to record an even par round.
"I actually played a lot better than yesterday, I just
didn’t have the same gloss on the round with the putter," said Moules.
"I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens, just didn’t
make many putts, I left a lot short. I think the rain overnight might have just
pulled them up a little bit."
"The best thing is that I am not going backwards. I will
leave it to the boys this afternoon to see what they can do and then I’ll tee
it up tomorrow."
Moules is now one shot off the pace and tied third with
Damien Jordan who had a second round of 2-under 70.
The afternoon field is now on course at Royal Port Moresby
Golf Club.
