Cameron Smith has continued his breakout year by taking top Australian honours at the final full field event of the PGA TOUR season.
Smith, whose dazzling finish at the US Open in June has spring boarded him to a PGA TOUR card for 2016, shot a final round 65 to climb into the top-20 at the Wyndham Championship and add $63,450 to his season’s earnings.
That brings his total for the year to $976,297 and though he doesn’t officially appear on this year’s money list would be in 100th position.
While it was another good week for Smith, Cameron Percy is licking his wounds after a disappointing final round saw him drop from a potential card keeping result to a T38 finish.
Entering Sunday inside the top-5 after some brilliant play in the opening three rounds, Percy needed to maintain his position to creep into the top 125 and retain playing rights for 2016.
After treading water with an opening nine of even par Percy struggled on the back nine with four dropped shots to fall well down the leader board and book a place in the upcoming qualifying series of tournaments to determine cards for next season.
Players finishing between 126 and 200 on the FedEx Cup points list will join with the top-75 earners from the Web.com Tour to determine 25 cards for next season over a four tournament series.
Also in that category will be Greg Chalmers who finished T51 at the Wyndham and 172nd on the FedEx list, Aaron Baddeley who missed the cut this week and finished 157th in FedEx Cup standings and Robert Allenby who missed the cut this week and finished 187th in the FedEx Cup.
Allenby could forego the qualifying series if he chooses as he has a career money list exemption to fall back on but there is no indication yet whether he will use that.
Adam Scott was the final Australian in the Wyndham field but continued a poor run of form with a T63 finish. Scott is a guaranteed starter at the first of the FedEx Cup playoff events next week but at 94th on the final list will need to play well to compete in the final three events.
After the top 125 play next week’s Barclays the field is reduced to 100 for the Deutsche Bank Championship, 70 for the BMW Championship and only the top 30 survive to the TOUR Championship.
