Australian Cameron Smith has made up ground on Asian Tour Order of Merit Leader David Lipski after finishing in tied fifth place at lasts weeks CIMB Classic.
The talented Smith shot a four-under-par 68 for a 12-under-par 276 total to finish in tied fifth place, five shots behind champion Ryan Moore at the event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and PGA TOUR.
The impressive finish, which was his sixth straight top-10 on the Asian Tour, saw him earn US$266,000 and shot him up to fourth position on the Order of Merit with US$427,476, some US$250,000 behind Lipsky.
Smith has enjoyed at fantastic debut season on the Asian Tour and with this top-10 finish has also earned an exemption into this week’s PGA TOUR stop in Mississippi, the Sanderson Farms Championship, which the 21-year-old Smith has taken with both hands.
"Beyond expectations for me. Yeah, I’m pretty happy," beamed Smith.
"I think I’m going to go (to the PGA Tour event next week). It would be a pretty hard offer to turn down."
With still plenty of tournament to be played over the next two months Smith will be aiming to continue his solid form and close the gap even further on Order of Merit Leader David Lipski.
