Beautiful weather greeted the field of 116 Trainees today at the Tocumwal Golf and Bowls Club for the first round of the 2017 Vic/Tas Trainee Championships.
Clear skies and only a slight breeze meant low score were expected and the players did not disappoint around the President’s course.
Leading the way is Kevin Smith, Trainee at the Pakenham Golf Club, and Mitchell Anketell, Trainee at the Huntingdale Golf Club, who both shot 4-under 68. Smith’s round was bogey free whilst Anketell’s lone bogey for the round came at his first hole of the day.
Close behind on 3-under 69 is Thomas Callendar (Qld), Gavin Fairfax (Vic), Joel Troy (NSW), Jason Perkin (NSW) and Thomas Corker (Vic).
Another cluster of players are on 2-under 70 including Luke Morrison (NSW), Correy Price (Vic), Sam Price (Qld), Robbie Hogan (NSW) & Jarrad Santi (NSW). A total of 21 players are par or better heading into round two.
Earlier in the week the PGA Trainees hosted a Junior Clinic for local Primary Schools. A total of 70 children from four primary schools enjoyed learning the basic skills of golf in fun and interactive games.
The second round will be played on the Captains course with play beginning from 7.45am. The forecast is for the sun to keep shining and the winds to remain low which is perfect for the good scoring to continue today.
