Scott heating up for summer of golf

Adam Scott set himself up perfectly for this week’s WGC event, and the upcoming Australian summer of golf, with a blistering final round to come within one of winning the PGA TOUR event in Malaysia.

""The 2013 Masters champion charged on Sunday at Kuala Lumpur Golf Club with a flawless 63 to close out the CIMB Classic and vaulting him within a stroke of winner Justin Thomas.

While disappointed to come so close yet be denied, the 35-year-old Scott will take nothing but confidence from his best finish of the year and fans in Australia could well be the beneficiaries.

"I would like to have a win before the end of the season," Scott said, making his intentions clear for his final three events of 2015, two of which will be in Australia.

"So this is a step in the right direction."

"Next week is the World Golf Championship. I would love to get into contention there and try and win."

While his final round was brilliant, Scott’s play all week was impressive with scores of 68-66-66-63 seeing him finish 25-under-par for the tournament.

His statistics were particularly encouraging, finishing top-5 in all important categories including putts per green in regulation.

As he gets more comfortable with the change from the broomstick putter and anchored stroke, Scott is looking to reassert himself at the top of the game in a generation of younger stars.

"Even at 35, unfortunately, it’s like your time’s numbered a little bit," Scott said when asked his thoughts on 22-year-old winner Justin Thomas.

"And that’s the way it’s going, the world’s moving fast now, so I’ve got to make the most of the next few years, absolutely.

"But, yeah, it’s motivating for sure. I want to get up there and play and show them that the old dog’s still got something."

Scott was easily the best of the eight Australians in the field, fellow Queenslander Scott Hend his closest challenger 13 shots behind at T27.

Marc Leishman posted his best score for the week on the final day with a 66 to be T29 while Cameron Smith, Matt Jones and John Senden all finished T37.

Andrew Dodt also had his best round of the week on Sunday with a 67 to move to T56, Steven Bowditch rounding out the Australian challenge at even par for the week and 71st position.
