The European Tour has been a happy hunting ground for Australia’s Tour Professionals and four past winners are aiming for their next win on home soil.
Brett Rumford, Richard Green, Marcus Fraser and Scott
Strange are all former winners on the European Tour and next month they will
tee up in the Australian PGA Championship, aiming to win the title for the
first time.
Coming into the December tournament, five-time European
Tour winner Rumford is showing excellent form after health issues plagued his
early-2015 season.
Last week Rumford won the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship in his
first tournament since making the cut at The Open in July while this week he is
the favourite to win the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open.
If he manages the feat it will be the second time in his
career he has won in consecutive weeks after doing so on the European Tour in
2013.
"It’s been a really funny year and
certainly the preparation hasn’t been anywhere near what I would have expected
to go out and win a championship," said Rumford who is optimistic about
his chances of winning the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open.
"To draw on previous experience, I have
gone back-to-back so at least I can draw on that."
"But every week is so different and
every win is so unique. A lot of it is out of your control, but it would be
great to win the WA Open again. It’s going to be stiff competition but it would be
fabulous if I could do it."
Delighted to see the Australian PGA Championship co-sanctioned
with the European Tour, Rumford believes it will open doors for young players
on the PGA Tour of Australasia.
"The opportunity being one of the first events on the
European Tour calendar is that it’s a two year exemption," explains Rumford.
"It’s a huge incentive but whenever you have an
opportunity like that then the competition is going to be strong as well."
"It’s certainly not going to be easy to go out there and
win a golf tournament, but if you do, it will be well deserved and it’s going
to be a huge opportunity."
Rumford is also looking forward to showing his European
Tour colleagues why the Australian PGA Championship is one of his favourites.
"We have a lot of Aussies playing on the European Tour
and the Aussie PGA has always been one of our favourite tournaments of the
year," added Rumford.
"It just has that relaxed, cruisey feel about it. All the
players get together and it’s almost a celebration of the year’s end and what
we do as a living."
"It’s just a really cool vibe around the tournament; it’s
just a bit of serious fun that we don’t really have throughout the rest of the
year. Most of the guys who play internationally love it as well."
Joining Rumford from Europe is Richard Green, a three-time
winner on the European Tour; he has already achieved success on the PGA Tour of
Australasia this year winning the Oates Vic Open in February.
Marcus Fraser, a two time European Tour winner, has also enjoyed
a solid year on the European Tour in 2015 playing in 22 events, making the cut
17 times with two top-5 finishes as well as a T20 finish at The Open.
A two time winner on the European Tour, Strange has been
competing closer to home in 2015 on the Japan Golf Tour where he has recorded
two top-3 finishes this year.
For Strange and many others in the field, the Australian
PGA Championship could be their ticket to the European Tour.
The Australian PGA Championship is
Australia’s richest golf tournament in 2015 being played for AU$1.75million and
co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour.
