Tod Power has won a playoff against reigning Australian Masters champion Peter Senior to win the 2015 Australian Legends Tour Championship at Byron Bay Golf Club.
Starting the day four ahead of a chasing packing including Senior, Rodger Davis, Mike Harwood and Ian Baker-Finch, with nine holes to play that lead was still intact.
That was until Power made a double bogey on the par three 12th hole followed by a bogey on the 13th and all of a sudden when both Senior and Davis made birdies on the 14th, the three were tied with four holes to play.
Pars on the 15th and 16th for all players meant that when Davis made birdie on the par three 17th hole, he would hold a one shot lead going down the last hole.
With Senior already in the clubhouse carding a final round of 70 and a tournament total of 1 under par, the stage was set for Davis – par or better for victory.
After driving it in the left rough on the 18th hole Davis’ second flew the green, requiring him to take an unplayable of which ultimately turned into a double bogey recording a tournament total of even par to be one behind Senior.
"I just got a flyer," said Davis.
"I made really good contact with my iron shot though as we have known all week, long around this course with the greens so quick was always going to be trouble."
That left Power to make par down the last hole of which he made to join Peter Senior in the first ever playoff at Byron Bay.
After both players drove it in the fairway it would be Power who would hit the green in regulation with Senior left with a tough chip to keep his chances alive.
With more than 500 spectators looking on, Senior failed to get up and down leaving Power to two putt and be crowed the 2015 Champion.
"It is a really surreal feeling at the moment. Watching Rodger hit it over the back on the last hole and then winning the playoff over one of our game’s greats Peter Senior, is something special," said Power.
"Now just a green keeper at Talai Golf Course, the nerves I felt down the stretch took my back to my younger years and even standing here with this trophy, my heart is still pounding."
Despite the generous $40,000 in prizemoney on offer for the professionals, most of the accolades have been for the quality of the golf course at Byron Bay Golf Club and with his background, Power has great respect for its condition this week.
"Shaun Cross and his team have done an amazing job, not only this year but every year we come back. You could play any tournament of any level here this week, the course is that good."
