A disappointing final round at the Thailand Golf Championship has cost Lismore’s Sam Brazel a chance to tee up in his first major championship but the 36-year-old will take plenty of confidence from his play at the Amata Springs Country Club.
A disappointing final round at the Thailand Golf Championship has cost Lismore’s Sam Brazel a chance to tee up in his first major championship but the 36-year-old will take plenty of confidence from his play at the Amata Springs Country Club.
Brazel, who closed with a 5-over round of 77, had been in the hunt all week for one of the four spots available to those finishing inside the top 12 but not otherwise qualified for a place at Royal Troon in 2016.
Starting the day in outright seventh after three solid rounds, Brazel was in trouble early with a double bogey-bogey start to make the turn three over.
Another double at the 12th spelt the end of his chances though he will take a lot of positives, and confidence, from the week.
With a star studded field on hand Brazel held his own over the first three days against the likes of Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer.
Opening rounds of 70-68-68 had him in good position to claim one of the 2016 Open spots before his costly Sunday stumble.
Brazel eventually shared top Australian honours with Terry Pilkadaris, the pair finishing 5-under-par for the week and T24.
Marcus Fraser and newly crowned Australian PGA champion Nathan Holman finished a shot further back and T30, Matt Giles rounding out the Australians who made the weekend at even par for the week and T57.
