The second round of the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship has been suspended for the day at City Golf Club in Toowoomba.
The second round of the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship has been suspended for the day at City Golf Club in Toowoomba.
The second round teed off as scheduled at 6.45am but the
first suspension of the day came quickly.
Players were taken off the course at 7.38am due to the layout
being unplayable from the heavy rain.
Players waited in the clubhouse while the grounds crew at
City Golf Course worked to make the course playable once again with the round
recommencing at 10.30am.
The morning field were able to complete their second rounds
with no further delays.
The inclement weather and delays did little to dampen Brad
Kennedy’s round, he fired 4-under 66 to top the leaderboard on 9-under the
card.
"It was a bit touch and go this morning, it’s hard when you
are in two minds, when you don’t know how many holes you are going to play,"
said Kennedy.
"I made a birdie on the 6th which gave me a little bit of
momentum. I birdied 10 and 11, I hit a great shot into 15 which got myself
going."
After two rounds Kennedy is bogey free despite playing very
little golf in his break and utilising a new set of irons.
"It’s all positive for me, I have a brand new set of irons
and a driver this week, so I’ve got seven clubs that I am using for the first
time in a tournament, they are serving me well," added Kennedy.
"I have been driving it quite nicely, which is especially important
on a course like City, if you are driving it well then you can score and that
is what I have been able to do."
"4-under today, I don’t think it will be enough, I think the
guys will get good conditions tomorrow morning but I will certainly be there
abouts at the end of round two."
The other standout performer from the morning field was New
Zealander Brad Shilton who fired a 6-under 64 to be outright third on 7-under
the card.
The afternoon field teed off their second round three hours late
at 2pm but were quickly suspended due to fog at 3.01pm.
Players remained in their positions on the golf course and
after a short break recommenced at 3.15pm.
With heavy rain hitting the area for a second time the
course once again went under water, play was suspended for the day at 3.45pm.
Overnight co-leader Aaron Townsend has completed six holes in
2-under the card and is currently one shot back of Brad Kennedy on 8-under.
Adam Blyth, who also co-led after round one, is even par
after three holes and outright fourth on 6-under the card.
The second round will recommence at 6.45am with some players
having as many as 17 holes to complete.
The third round will tee off at the conclusion of the second
round tomorrow.
