Cameron Percy has played his way into next week’s Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club thanks to a final round sprint into the top 10 at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Percy started the day in a share of 16^th position but produced a fine round of 3-under 69 to climb six place on the leaderboard and share 10^th place.

The finfish means he will now earn a guaranteed start at next week’s tournament, a boost for the South Australian who has only limited playing status for the season.

A second round of 66 was crucial to Percy’s good result, that round coming at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, one of three courses used for the tournament.

While pleased with his performance, though, Percy didn’t take honours for top Australian with World Number One Jason Day securing that honour finishing T5.

While never a real theat to eventual winner Jordan Spieth, Day will be pleased with his Sunday round of 5-under 67 which was bettered by only two other players on the day.

The real damage was done for Day in round three where a roller coaster 75 dropped him out of genuine contention for the title.

Jordan Spieth claimed the victory for his ninth PGA TOUR triumph by a margin of four shots and seven ahead of Day.

“Obviously, the third round is what killed me this week,” Day said Sunday.

“Just got off to a bad start. I just, unfortunately, made mistake after mistake and got a couple of bad breaks. But you just can’t be making those errors, especially if you want to win a tournament.

“The good part about that is that I’ve made a lot of birdies and an eagle. The hard part is to just try and minimise those mistakes.

“I just got to try and somehow just take the positives out of it, because, obviously, I could sit there and go, I didn’t win the tournament because of round three, but there’s a lot of positives coming out of it.”

While Day will lament his Saturday performance Geoff Ogilvy will look to a final round of 1-over 73 as a disappointing end to an otherwise strong week.

The 2006 US Open winner has shown signs of a return to form in 2017 and was again in good position through three rounds this past week.

The 40-year-old made plenty of birdies in the final round but offset those with even more mistakes though T14 is far from a poor result.

Matt Jones was next best of the Australians at T23, one shot ahead of Brett Drewitt who was the last of the Australians to make the cut.

Stuart Appleby, John Senden, Cameron Smith, Rod Pampling, Greg Chalmers and Steven Bodwitch all missed the cut.
