Cameron Percy has produced a much needed top 15 performance at the PGA TOUR’s John Deere Classic as he tries to play his way back to the circuit full time.
Percy fired a final round 67 to jump up the leaderboard in Illinois but, more importantly, climb 12 places on the FedEx Cup table.
With only limited access to the TOUR this season Percy has played just 19 events and currently sits 135th in the standings, needing to be top-125 by the end of the regular season to earn back full status.
Percy was strong in all areas of the game at TPC Deere Run with scores of 69-69-66-67 good for 13-under-par and a share of 12th position.
Percy was the best of the three Australians who made the cut with both Greg Chalmers and Stuart Appleby finishing in a share of 25th position at 11-under.
While a 1-under 70 Sunday was not what Appleby wanted he will be pleased with his week overall after producing his best round of the year Saturday, a 7-under 64.
Appleby has played limited events in 2017 after back surgery in 2015 and struggling in 2016, his 12 starts yielding nine missed cuts and a withdrawal from one other tournament.
After opening with 73 Appleby backed up with 66-64 and will take some confidence to the few remaining tournaments this season.
Eight Australians began the week but five failed to qualify for the weekend, rookie Curtis Luck missing by a single stroke after rounds of 71-70.
Geoff Ogilvy was three outside the number, Matt Jones and Brett Drewitt a further stroke back.
Steven Bowditch’s difficulties continued as he posted scores of 76-79.
