New Zealander Simon Owen has won the Coca-Cola Australian PGA Seniors Championship in dramatic circumstances.

Finishing regulation play tied with Australian Michael Harwood on 2-under the card, Owen made birdie on the first playoff hole to ensure the title was his.

Terry Price, Tim Elliot and Alan Cooper all finished one shot outside the playoff.
 
Owen, the 1978 Open Championship runner-up showed nerves of steel during the first playoff hole, hitting three wood off the tee to within 20 feet of the hole on the short par-4 18th.

Harwood, also an Open Championship runner-up, chose to lay-up and after his birdie putt from 10 feet failed to drop, the trophy and Championship was Owen’s.

"I’m ecstatic to win this tournament. There are some great names on this trophy and it’s an honour to now be alongside them," said Owen.

A two time winner of the New Zealand PGA Senior Championship this was Owen’s first time contesting the Australian PGA Senior Championship which is sanctioned by the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour.

Harwood may not have won today but as the leading Australian he has earned a start in the Australian PGA Championship to be played at RACV Royal Pines Resort from 11-14 December.

It was a fantastic week of tournament golf at Richmond Golf Club with the community turning out to support the event.

"Everything about this tournament was fantastic and we were delighted to be here for a second consecutive year," said Andy Rogers, Legends Tour Coordinator for the PGA of Australia.

"The support and hospitality shown towards the players was second to none."
