After a close call at the Fiji International Wade Ormsby’s second consecutive top 10 at the Made in Denmark tournament has vaulted him inside the top 100 on the Race to Dubai and a chance to play his way to the lucrative season ending Finals Series.
Entering the final round at Himmerland Golf Club within four of leader David Horsey, Ormsby would have harboured hopes of a maiden European Tour victory and while
inevitably disappointed not to have achieved that goal he will, in the bigger picture, be encouraged by the current state of his game.
A mystery neck ailment in April last year cost Ormsby several months of the 2016 season and playing 2017 on a medical exemption meant some uncertainty about his status for 2018.
But back to back top 10 finishes, a T5 in Fiji and T6 this week, have allayed those concerns and at 89th on the standings Ormsby will now be eyeing a potential move into the top 60.
That would give him access to the three season ending events in Turkey, South Africa and Dubai and a chance to share in the $5 million bonus pool.
Ormsby was one of six Australians in the field in Denmark and one of three to make the cut with Ben Eccles and Richard Green also playing the weekend.
Green produced his best golf of the week Sunday, his 3-under 68 moving him 13 places up the leaderboard and next best behind Ormsby at T31.
Stepping up from the secondary Challenge Tour for the week Ben Eccles was consistent without being spectacular, three sub-par rounds seeing him finish 3-under and T49.
Fellow Challenge Tour regular Ryan McCarthy also played in Denmark and after a spectacular opening 66 was inside the top 10.
However, he couldn’t maintain the momentum and with two double bogeys on the card in round two signed for a 78 that saw him miss the cut.
Marcus Fraser and Nathan Holman also found the going tough, both missing the cut after poor opening rounds.
