Twenty-five players will earn 2019 PGA Tour cards at the conclusion of the Web.Com Tour’s WinCo Foods Portland Open on Sunday but the ramifications for the Australasians travel far deeper than that.
The Web.com’s regular season schedule comes to a conclusion in America’s Pacific Northwest on the Witch Hollow course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club and there is plenty to play for the four Aussies and two Kiwis teeing it up.
A strong finish last week saw Australian Open champion Cameron Davis move to within eight spots of the top 25 with Rhein Gibson also within reach in 44th position.
Davis’s tie for 14th at the Ellie Mae Classic was the first Web.com Tour cut he had made since his win in the Nashville Golf Open in May but a second-round 66 wasn’t enough for Gibson to reach the weekend, the 32-year-old missing the cut in his past three Web.com starts.
Davis, Gibson and Brett Drewitt (58th) are safely ensconced inside the top 75 who advance to the Web.com Tour Finals, their cards for 2019 all but secured along with another opportunity to earn a PGA Tour card for next season.
The path to the finals is by no means a guarantee however for Jamie Arnold and Curtis Luck who sit in 73rd and 83rd position respectively heading into the WinCo Foods Portland Open.
After starting July with consecutive top-20 finishes Arnold has missed his past four cuts but can take confidence from his appearance at Pumpkin Ridge last year where he finished tied for 19th.
After playing 10 events on the PGA Tour in 2017 Luck is now staring down the barrel of having to return to Q School with Final Stage available for those who finish between 76-85 and Second Stage for those who end the regular season between 86-100.
Kiwi pair Tim Wilkinson (96th) and Steven Alker (98th) require an exceptional week to play their way into Finals contention but at the very least will be determined to maintain their position within the top 100 come Sunday night.
There are three events remaining on Canada’s Mackenzie Tour with Australian representatives Brett Coletta, Mathew Goggin and Ruben Sondjaja all out early in the first round of the Players Cup at the Southwood Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg.
Sitting in 25th position on the order of merit, Coletta could break into the top five with a win while Sondjaja has a chance to solidify his position inside the top 50.
There were encouraging signs for Goggin in his debut on the Mackenzie Tour last week at the ATB Financial Classic, the Tasmanian opening and closing with rounds of 67 as he finished tied for 49th at 4-under par.
