PGA TOUR Pro Rhein Gibson has shown his class around
the Bungool course at Riverside Oaks to take the lead at the halfway mark of
the NSW PGA Championship.
Firing 4-under 68 in the second round, Gibson is now 10-under for the
tournament and leading the field by one shot.
As the highest ranked player in the tournament, Gibson is living up to the
expectations placed on him this week and will now be the man to chase down over
the weekend.
Sitting just one shot behind him after a second round 5-under 67 is rookie Pro
Lucas Herbert.
Having made his Pro debut at the UNIQLO Masters, Herbert recorded two missed
cuts in his first tournaments but is pleased to see his ability shining through
this week.
A win at the NSW PGA Championship would launch Herbert’s career and see him
avoid a trip to Qualifying School next week.
Also playing for his status on Tour next year is Christopher Wood, he needs a
top-2 finish this week to avoid going to final stage Qualifying School next
year.
Thanks to firing his second consecutive round of 4-under 68 he is well
positioned at outright third on the leaderboard.
Sitting a further shot back again on 7-under the card is PGA Trainee graduate
Deyen Lawson.
Rounding out the top-5 on 6-under the card are Ewan Porter and Brett Rankin.
The second round cut was made at 1-over the card with 53 Professionals and two
amateurs making the weekend rounds.
The third round will tee off at 7.50am with the final group of Gibson, Herbert
and Wood teeing off at 11am.
As the final event on the PGA Tour of Australasia in 2015 there is a lot on the
line for the players at the NSW PGA Championship. For a full summary of where
players need to finish to keep their Tour cards please visit pga.org.au.

Key Quotes:
Rhein Gibson 66, 68,
10-under, 1st
"It was nice this morning then after about three holes it started getting
really hot. The last three holes the wind started to pick up, but I am pretty
happy."
"I got off to a decent start, I birdied 3, 5 and 8 to turn in 3-under, and like
I said yesterday holes 7 through 11 are the ones you really have to go after.
Unfortunately I didn’t birdie 10, the par-5 with a 5 iron, I birdied 11 and the
putter got a little cold coming in, I had opportunities every hole to make
birdie but I just couldn’t get them to fall."
Lucas Herbert, 68,
67, 9-under, 2nd
"I got off to a pretty hot start. I knew teeing off the 7th that
there are a few birdie holes there early so I just tried to capitalise on them
and fortunately I did. Then it was just about trying to hold on with the wind
coming in, it made it pretty tough late."
"It’s hard to know, with guys like Rhein in the field and a lot of other good
players playing, it’s really hard to go out there expecting to win. But if I
can get my name up there in contention on Sunday you never know what might
happen, a win would definitely be very helpful."
