The Northern Territory is set to welcome the PGA Tour of
Australasia as the newest destination for Professional golfers.
Launched today, the Palmerston Golf Course will host the
Northern Territory PGA Championship from 11-14 August 2016.
"I am delighted to announce the Northern Territory PGA
Championship as the newest tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia," said
Brian Thorburn, CEO of the PGA of Australia which oversees the PGA Tour of
Australia.
"The PGA is committed to expanding the footprint of
Professional golf across Australia and expose sports fans to the great game of
golf in their own backyard."
The Northern Territory PGA Championship demonstrates the
State Government’s commitment to grass roots sport and the local tourism
industry.
"The Northern
Territory PGA Championship will be the first PGA Tour of Australasia event ever
held in the Northern Territory and that is wonderful news for local golfers," said
the Hon. Nathan Barrett, NT Minister for Sport and Recreation.
"This is a perfect
demonstration of the Country Liberals Government’s unwavering commitment to
providing grass roots sport with real pathways to international competition."
"We are expecting
golfers from across Australia, New Zealand and Asia in Darwin for the event and
that will provide international exposure for the Northern Territory and great
financial returns for the Darwin hospitality industry."
The tournament will be played for a
prize purse of $150,000, attract Official World Golf Ranking points and provide
the champion with a full exemption onto the PGA Tour of Australasia until the
end of the 2017 season.
"Tournaments like the Northern Territory PGA Championship
are incredibly important to the ongoing success of Australian golf on the world
stage," added Thorburn.
"They provide the rising stars of Aussie golf with the
opportunity to hone their craft. Some of the our best players including PGA
TOUR winners Steven Bowditch and Marc Leishman began their careers competing in
tournaments like this."
The Northern Territory PGA Championship will be the
highlight on the golfing schedule in the Territory, which enjoys a healthy golf
scene including a strong junior golf program."
"While the tournament will bring the PGA Tour of Australasia
to the Territory for the week, it is planned that it will continue to grow the
game in the area," added Thorburn.
"There will be plenty of opportunities for the local
community to become involved in the tournament via volunteering to work on the
event or through the golf clinics on offer throughout the week."
"The Northern Territory PGA Championship will be a festival
of golf and we look forward to working with the State Government and Palmerston
Golf Course on a successful first tournament and set a benchmark for a long and
successful future."
The Northern Territory PGA Championship sees the PGA Tour of
Australasia schedule contain 16 tournaments in 2016 played across five
countries.
