It’s the week West Australian Brett Rumford has been gearing up for, a European Tour event in his home town.
The ISPS Handa Perth International is being played at Lake Karrinyup Country Club and by the time play tees off on Thursday Rumford will be one of the most prepared players on course.
"It’s an event on the European Tour calendar, there is World Ranking Points; it’s purely business for me this week," said Rumford.
"But it’s not just another tournament and it would be nice to play well in front of home crowds. I have done everything I can to make sure that happens."
"I have been doing a lot of study on this course in the months before the Middle Eastern swing."
"I didn’t play Malaysia, even though it’s a big event, because it suited me to focus on this as a home tournament. There was no travel, no jet lag, I just wanted to be as fresh as possible for this tournament."
Winning a European Tour event on home soil is a huge motivator for Rumford who last won on the lucrative Tour in 2013 when he won back-to-back tournaments.
"It’s a tournament on the calendar that I am looking forward to playing well in and using it as a stepping stone to moving my year ahead and ticking off a few things I am trying to achieve in my game," added Rumford.
"Deep down, I know that if I play well I have a good chance of winning."
This year could present his best chance at claiming the ISPS Handa Perth International title, Rumford showed good signs finishing tied 6th when he returned to South Africa 11 months after having 30cm of his intestine removed.
"After three weeks in the Middle East, then playing the Tshwane Open and having a week off before here, I was looking for some momentum and match fitness which I have got and my game feels good," added Rumford who hopes to keep a scrappy round out of his Perth International campaign.
"I feel like my game is close enough, I have just put in some average rounds seemingly every tournament which has held me back. It inhibited my chances of finishing top-10 in the Middle East, even though I was inside top-10 at some point almost every week."
"But I am being really patient out on the golf course. My attitude has been great for a long while now and I feel like my game is coming back."
While winning is on his mind, Rumford is also hoping to shine a light on his beloved Western Australia.
"I am a little bit biased of course but I think that in all my travels, I think it’s one of the best places in the world that we visit," added Rumford.
"We have great weather year round which is a huge bonus, beautiful beaches, great golf courses and wineries down South. It’s a great lifestyle."
"Having pictures pumped out around the world of what a great place Perth is a great thing, hopefully it encourages young travellers to come and visit."
