Hyun-woo Ryu is the beneficiary of the change to the rulesof golf introduced by the R&A and USGA at the 1st of January.
Playing the 1st hole at The Hills yesterday in the third round of the BMW ISPS HANDA New Zealand Open, overnight Ryu was found to have played from a wrong position after taking a drop.
Given the situation was only raised this morning; Ryu should have incurred a two shot penalty therefore he signed for an incorrect score.
Prior to 1 January, this would have resulted in his disqualification due to signing an incorrect scorecard.
However under the new exception to Rule 6-6d, Ryu has been penalised with the two shots he should have received plus a further two shots for the breach of the new rule.
It is believed that this is the first time the new exception to Rule 6-6d has been applied in a professional golf tournament.
While Ryu’s score changes from 9-under to 5-under and he drops from T6 on the leaderboard to 27th he will keep his original fourth round tee time.
