For Meg Kuchar the act of giving comes naturally and her dedication to supporting America’s returned war veterans to ensure their ongoing wellbeing has brought her significant reward.
It’s well known that the golf industry is a substantial contributor to charity and for the past five years Meg has volunteered her time to train Labrador Retrievers for K9s for Warriors, a program that has transformed the lives of American war veterans.
Sheri Duval, the step mother of PGA TOUR Professional David Duval, began the charity that places service dogs with veterans who are suffering post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries.
"These dogs are not only changing lives but saving lives," said Meg.
"We have 22 veterans a day committing suicide and literally the dogs can save a life."
Spirit of honour was the first of two dogs Meg trained for the charity which blends a unique training program with the undeniable bond between man and dog.
"I got mine as eight-week old pups, but 97 per cent of the dogs that go into service for K9 for Warriors are rescues and so it’s a second chance for both the dog and the veteran which is lovely."
"I had the dogs from eight weeks until about nine or 10 months at which point they’ve gone into full service with their veteran."
The K9s for Warriors facility began with the ability to train just three veterans at a time, but in a short amount of time have grown and now have the capacity to graduate up to 16 veterans a time.
"They service veterans from all over the USA. The first dog I trained is living in Minnesota and I stay in touch with the veteran."
"It is very rewarding. It’s painful to say goodbye because in that amount of time you love the dog as much as if it was your own, but the sacrifice saying goodbye as compared to the sacrifice the veteran has made is very minuscule and I think of it as a labour of love."
100 per cent of individual donations go directly to the program, which also relies on corporate sponsors funds.
"Being able to give back to the community in which we live has been a real privilege and honour for me."
Outside of working with K9s for Warriors, Meg is also involved with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville and together with husband Peter, have helped to organises the RMHC Jacksonville Golf Classic at TPC Sawgrass on October 26.
