Brody Martin (WA) from Marangaroo Golf Club has finished a grueling 36 hole final day battle with Braden Becker (WA) to win the 2014 WA/NT Trainee Championship presented by ADH Club Car.
Martin proved too consistent for the rest of the field with scores of 75,70,75,70 and a total of +2 (290) which earned Martin a one shot victory.
The Lakelands Country Club provided a difficult test for the field with birdies hard to come by. The low round for the tournament was -3 (69) by Becker in round two.
"This layout is testament that you don’t have to make a golf course really long to provide a stern test." said Becker.
"The golf course is really tight off the tee and placement and strategy played a big part in scoring this week. You just couldn’t blaze away with driver for too long because it was bound to bite you."
Martin played with Becker across all four rounds and knew exactly what he was up against and exactly what he had to do.
"I only got the lead on the 68th hole of the tournament and I didn’t want to let the opportunity slip through my fingers," said Martin.
"On the back nine it felt like we were playing match-play and pushing each other all the way to the finish."
"I was really proud of how I hung in there and dug deep. I played the final nine holes in 2-under and that feeling of getting it done under pressure was what we all play for."
With a big win under his belt Martin, (a first year PGA Trainee) is now considering a visit to the east coast later in the year to test his game at the National Futures Championship to be played at Ballarat Golf Club in a couple of months.
