Leishman loving Hawaii

Marc Leishman’s love affair with the Sony Open in Hawaii has continued, the Victorian taking top Australian honours with a top-20 finish at the first tournament of the year.

Marc Leishman’s love affair with the Sony Open in Hawaii has continued, the Victorian taking top Australian honours with a top-20 finish at the first tournament of the year.

""Leishman has shown a liking for the Waialale golf and Country Club since joining the PGA TOUR in 2009 and grew his cut streak to eight with another solid performance this week.

Twice the 33-year-old has managed to finish inside the top-10 at the year’s first full field event and while his 12-under effort was only good for T20 this year he will be pleased to have posted four rounds in the 60’s once again.

Only seven times in his 32 tours around the course has Leishman failed to break par, the last time coming in 2015.

Leishman carded rounds of 68-66-66-68 to be one shot ahead of Cameron Smith who finished T27 at 11-under the card.

Smith made a promising start with an opening 6-under 64 but struggled to go forward in the low scoring event with subsequent scores of 68-69-68.

While he will be disappointed not to have gone on with things after such a solid start, Smith will take plenty of confidence from a week where only a cold putter stood between him and a top 10 finish.

The veteran Rod Pampling was the last of the Australians to play all four rounds his 4-under total for the week seeing him finish near the tail of the field at T64.

Cameron Percy made the halfway cut but was among the victims of the Saturday cut when the field was a reduced a second time to make Sunday tee times more manageable.

It was a disappointing third round for the former TOUR member who is playing on limited status in 2017 and would be hoping to make the most of every opportunity.

Percy made an encouraging start with rounds of 69-67 but slumped to a third round 74 and miss Sunday’s play.

Greg Chalmers and John Senden both missed the weekend, neither close to the 3-under required to play the final 36 holes.

Chalmers was 1-under for his opening two days while Senden was even par after back to back rounds of 70.
