With one of the strongest
fields ever to assemble at the northern NSW layout, Byron Bay Golf Club are
well prepared to host the 2015 Australian Legends Tour Championship.
1991 British Open Champion
Ian Baker-Finch, 2015 Australian Masters champion Peter Senior and defending
champion David Merriman are amongst the star studded field set to tee off.
Senior, who is enjoying
being back in Australia after a mixed year on the Champions Tour in the US, is looking
forward to getting back to Byron Bay.
"I love the golf course at
Byron Bay. It is always in superb condition and the greens are some of the best
we will putt on all year," said Senior.
"My wife June and I really
enjoy the relaxed atmosphere in Byron Bay and will be treating the trip like a
bit of a holiday though I can tell you I am not travelling down to make up the
numbers as I would really like to be in contention down the stretch on Sunday
afternoon."
The two day pro-am format
will see more than 100 amateurs competing alongside the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour
Professionals before they step aside on Sunday to decide who will take home the
lion’s share of the $40,000 in prize money.
Other notables in the field
include 2010 champion Michael Harwood, 2014 Order of Merit Champion Tim Elliott
as well as Legends Tour regulars Rodger Davis, Richard Backwell, Mike Zilko and
Glenn Joyner.
Joyner, who has recently
just returned from overseas after successfully getting through to the final
stage of the Japan PGA Senior Tour, says he is glad to be back on home soil.
"I have had a wonderful year
travelling but there is nothing like being home in Australia," said Joyner.
"Byron Bay has certainly
turned it on for us this week and like many others, I am really looking forward
to the tournament getting under way."
The first tee time in the
morning is 6:44am with Senior (12:12pm) and Baker-Finch (12:44pm) making their
way on course early in the afternoon. Entry to the tournament is free and
spectators are welcome.
