Danny Lee has torched his final nine holes of the PGA TOUR’s OHL Mayakoba Classic in Mexico to race up the leaderboard.

""The New Zealander started on the 10th tee Sunday and after trading two birdies with as many bogeys on his opening nine got hot on the course’s front-9 holes with five birdies for a stunning 31.

Lee began Sunday at 2-under and outside the top-50 but his blistering finish saw him leapfrog more than 25 players as he eventually finished T26.

It was a difficult week at the El Camaleon course with major weather delays playing havoc with the schedule and seeing several players forced to play more than 30 holes Sunday.

More than two hours was lost Friday afternoon with the threat of lightning and play was also delayed until the afternoon Saturday throwing the tournament schedule into chaos.

The final three groups never got to begin their third rounds Saturday but with improved weather Sunday, organisers managed to complete 72 holes on schedule.

While Lee found form late in the day the stop-start nature of proceedings over the course of the week proved more challenging for the remaining five Australasians in the field.

Matt Jones, Tim Wilkinson, Geoff Ogilvy, Greg Chalmers and Aaron Baddeley all did well to make the cut but struggled for momentum over the closing two days.

At the end of the 72 holes, Jones was the best of the group after Lee at 3-under and T50 though will rue a poor finish.

Jones made the turn 2-under for the day in the final round but three bogeys and a double in a five hole stretch on the back-9 saw him slip down the standings.

New Zealand’s Tim Wilkinson was a shot behind Jones and T55 after an even par final round while Geoff Ogilvy will leave Mexico with mixed feelings.

Having played well in patches throughout the week Ogilvy eventually signed for scores of 68-71-72-73 to be even par and T68.

Greg Chalmers finished at the same mark as Ogilvy while Aaron Baddeley. Who made the cut on the number, finished 74th after being unable to get anything going in the final round.
