At points on Friday, Stephen Leaney held a five shot lead at Royal Perth Golf Club yet he will share the top spot overnight with an on fire Callan O’Reilly.

Playing in the afternoon field and starting the day in the lead, Stephen Leaney looked unstoppable on the front-9 reeling off three birdies.

Some mistakes on the way into the clubhouse cost Leaney the outright lead at the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open however he is happy with his position heading into the weekend.

“Yesterday I couldn’t find the clubface and today I hit it in the middle of the clubface all day and I couldn’t hole a putt – yesterday I holed everything. That’s just the way the game is sometimes,“ said Leaney.

“You can’t always match it all up, putting and ball striking, but if you told me yesterday that’d I’d be tied for the lead after two days I would have sat in the clubhouse and been happy with that. All in all it’s all good."

Firing the round of the day, 7-under 65, O’Reilly is happy to find some form heading into a big summer of golf on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia.

“You always know that someone is going to have a low score in these conditions, with these sorts of fields and around this kind of golf course. It is just nice that it was me,” said O’Reilly.

“I just want to keep playing alright, obviously the trophy is the goal, but I just want to try and put four rounds together.

“We have a big four events coming up after this so it’s about setting yourself up for a nice summer.”

Sitting two shots off the lead are New Zealander Mark Brown and New South Welshman Matt Stieger who had rounds of 68 and 69 respectively.

Playing in the morning field, West Australian Michael Sim has moved his way into contention despite an unusual day on course.

With a round of 2-under 70, Sim is tied fifth and three shots off the lead after some excellent short game play.

“I made a few birdies from the wrong fairways actually. I was hitting mostly to the right today, I signed for 70, but it could have been a lot more,” said Sim, who is joined on the leaderboard by Daniel Hoeve (WA) and Michael Choi (VIC).

“On 17, I hit from the wrong fairway, to about three feet. So I think I had about four tap in birdies from some nice wedge play.”

The second round cut was made at 1-over the card with 50 professionals and 8 amateurs making the weekend rounds.

LPGA graduate Hannah Green teetered on the edge of the cut line all day but bogeys at the 11^th and 17^th proved costly.

The third round of the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open tees off at 9am with the leaders on course at 10.30am.
