Recently crowned Nexus Risk TSA Services WA Open champion Stephen Leaney will be looking to continue his good form as he leads a larger than normal Australasian contingent into battle at this week’s Indonesian Open.
Leaney’s historic sixth WA Open victory will hold him in good stead this week, the veteran passing the test of a pressure packed finish at Royal Perth in style.
There will be 19 Australians and New Zealanders in this week’s field with a long list of PGA Tour of Australasia invitees making the trip to join Asian Tour regulars Jake Higginbottom, Terry Pilkadaris, Scott Barr and Marcus Both.
A total of 12 players have been invited under the ‘Regional PGA’ category, Leaney and reigning NSW Open champion Adam Blyth among them.
Also on the list is Jack Wilson, Anthony Quayle, Andrew Martin, Daniel Nisbet, Tom Power Horan, Michael Choi, Austin Batista, Dale Williamson, Campbell Rawson and New Zealanders Fraser Wilkin and Gareth Paddison.
David Gleeson and Sydney’s Nathan Park will also tee up after receiving sponsor’s invitations.
One of the smaller purses on the Asian Tour circuit the week is still an important one as the season winds down, Jake Higginbottom in particular keen to post a good finish.
The former ISPS HANDA New Zealand Open winner produced some good golf at last week’s Macao Open to finish top-15 and climb inside the top 60 on the Order of Merit and will be keen to advance further this week.
Only the top 60 retain playing rights for next season and while being 59th presently has him inside the number he will need to add significantly to his current earnings to remain there.
Scott Barr and Marcus Both, both of whom have only limited status on the Tour this season, will also be looking for good results this week as both currently sit outside the top 60.
Terry Pilkadaris, Todd Sinnott, Jason Norris and Scott Hend are the only regular Asian Tour players inside the top 60, Hend the best at third on the standings and Norris 15th.
Pilkadaris is the only one of that group in the field this week and while 46th and seemingly safe a good performance would be welcome.
