Lawson claims Southern Trainee Championship

Curlewis Golf Club’s Deyen Lawson has secured the CPM Southern Division Trainee Championships in emphatic style at the Tocumwal Golf Club.

Curlewis Golf Club’s Deyen Lawson has secured the CPM Southern Division Trainee Championships in emphatic style at the Tocumwal Golf Club.

""Lawson, who is the reigning New South Wales and Queensland Trainee Champion made a clean sweep at the east coast championship and stamped his authority on the Trainee player rankings.

Deyen bogeyed his first hole on day one, but went on to produce a stunning run of play that included two eagles and five birdies in his next 11 holes; completing the round as high winds battered the course with a 7-under 65 to open up a four stroke lead.

Despite being caught to share the halfway lead with New South Wales Trainee Adam Porker, who later withdraw due to injury,  saw Lawson produce more outstanding play and stretch back out to a four shot advantage entering today’s final round.

Unfazed by the pressure of leading, Deyen opened his round with birdies on three of the opening seven holes as he continued to play stellar golf on his way to a bogey free final round of 67 and close out the championship at 13-under par.

"I am pleased after two runner-up finishes here to win this event," said Deyen.

"I feel since this event last year I have been better prepared for all of my events, which has given me more confidence to score well,"

"When I didn’t win last year, my coach Darrell Brown of 13th Beach told me a few home truths about the level of work I was putting in and since then I have worked much harder, especially on my short game. In the final two rounds this week my chipping kept my momentum going, which allowed me to play to the level required to win this event".

Deyen will now focus his attention on defending his New South Wales and Queensland Trainee Championship tiles.

"I am looking forward now to defending my New South Wales and Queensland Trainee Championship tiles, completing my PGA Traineeship, and heading off to try to qualify for the Asian Tour, China Tour and PGA Tour of Australia next year."

In 2014, champion Jack Wilson went on to win the WA PGA Championship and finish third behind Adam Scott and Rickie Fowler in the PGA Championship at RACV Royal Pines, and with the current form Deyen is displaying, exciting things are in store for the Victorian.

Runner up Taylor Cooper was upbeat about his week and was pleased with his comeback after a difficult start and also has a summer of tournaments ahead of him.

"Since playing in the worst of the weather on day one I was pleased with the way I have fought back and was nine under for my final two rounds."

"I am off to get married soon and look forward to playing in the NSW Trainee Championships after honeymooning in Bali".

The Tocumwal Golf Club played a magnificent role as hosts of the event and the course and facilities were set up to Tour standard for the week.

All Trainees were very complimentary to the club, especially General Manager Anton Noble, Golf Operations manager Rod Booth, and the course superintendent Matt McLeod and his team who did a great job preparing the courses in tournament condition.
