Matt Jones has some good memories to draw
on at this week’s Wyndham Championship as he tries to keep his place in the
top-125 of the FedEx Cup standings and earn a place in the upcoming playoffs.
Jones, who crept from 126 to 124 in the
rankings after a T27 finish at last week’s John Deere Classic, was T5 the last
time he played at Sedgefield Country Club in 2013 and would love to find that
form again this week.
The Wyndham is the final event before the
playoffs start, Jones one of five Australians presently in line to be part of
at least the first tournament at next week’s Barclay’s.
Jason Day, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, John
Senden, Aaron Baddeley and Jones are all inside the top-125 though only Jones
tees up this week.
Among those outside the number and needing
something spectacular to climb in are Greg Chalmers (146), Geoff Ogilvy (167),
Cameron Smith (154), Cameron Percy (171), Rod Pampling (193), Rhein Gibson
(202), Stuart Appleby (141) and Robert Allenby (239).
Of those Ogilvy will be the one to watch in
South Carolina after an encouraging four rounds at the John Deere last week.
Since producing a final round 63 at the
Canadian Open three weeks ago the 2006 US Open winner added four sub 70 rounds
to his resume last week and will arrive at Sedgefield with some momentum.
Ogilvy has been an infrequent visitor to
this event and finished T37 in his last appearance in 2013 but will be highly
motivated this week and could surprise a few.
Cameron Smith, too, impressed in Illinois
at the weekend and having earned his card for this year’s PGA TOUR in
spectacular fashion he will be keen to hang on to it with some strong play this
week.
Jarrod Lyle also has his last throw of the
dice in his bid to get back to the PGA TOUR, a high finish or win his only
chance of having a chance to avoid Q-School.
