Matt Jones will be seeking revenge of sorts when he tees up at this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open after sharing the 36 hole lead in the event last year before fading at the weekend.
Back to back rounds of 65 had the Sydney-sider well placed going into the weekend but his driver let him down on Saturday and he failed to break par on Sunday to eventually drift to a share of 12th.
Jones, who is very familiar with the TPC Scottsdale layout having used the course as his main practise ground for many years while living in the area, has been in solid form early in 2015 and after a poor opening round last week in California finished strong with rounds of 67-64-68.
This will be Jones’ sixth appearance in Phoenix with last year’s result his best, three missed cuts and a T40 making up the rest of his resume.
With a win at last year’s Shell Houston Open under his belt Jones is better equipped to deal with being near the top of the leaderboard should he find himself there again and it would be no surprise to see him contending on Sunday.
Jones is one of five Australians in this week’s field where he is joined by former winner Aaron Baddeley, Steven Bowditch, Geoff Ogilvy and Robert Allenby.
Baddeley’s 2007 win aside TPC Scottsdale hasn’t been overly kind to the Australian contingent. Geoff Ogilvy’s best finish in 12 tries is a T13 in 2011 to go with four missed cuts while Bowditch finished at the tail of the field in just his second appearance last year.
Robert Allenby has the most consistent record of the Australians with two top-10’s and just two missed cuts in 11 attempts but given his distractions this week after the incident in Hawaii a fortnight ago it seems unlikely he will be a contender.
