With limited status on the PGA TOUR in 2017 Matt Jones will be looking for a big performance at this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open after receiving a sponsor’s invitation to play.
Jones, who was agonisingly close to keeping his card at the back end of 2016, lives in the Phoenix area and often practices at the TPC Scottsdale facility.
Jones has played three events on the new wraparound schedule but with two missed cuts and a T15 to show for his labours so far is in need of something more substantial this week.
His best previous finish at this tournament came in 2014 when he held the lead heading into the third round but faded at the weekend.
The 2015 Australian Open winner is one of seven Australians guaranteed a tee time this week with two players, Cameron Percy and Cameron Smith, on the alternates list for the tournament.
Aaron Baddeley, Greg Chalmers, Steven Bowditch, Marc Leishman, Geoff Ogilvy and Rod Pampling will also tee up in Phoenix, Baddeley trying to add a second Waste Management title to his resume.
The 35-year-old claimed the third of his five PGA TOUR titles in 2007 but it’s been a mixed bag for the Victorian in his 13 other appearances.
Four missed cuts and no top-10’s outside of his 2007 victory is a record Baddeley will be keen to improve on though he comes into the week off a missed cut at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Fellow Victorian Marc Leishman will also be keen to put a disappointing final round in California behind him when he tees up in Arizona for the first time since 2014.
There was a lot to like about Leishman’s play at Torrey Pines last week and while TPC Scottsdale is a less demanding test than what the players faced in California he will be one to watch this week.
Of the rest, Geoff Ogilvy has played this tournament every year since 2002 and while his best finish to date has been T13 in 2011 he is capable of going low at the course with two 65’s to his name.
