From one start in two years to two starts in two weeeks – that’s the reward for Mark Hensby after his excellent play at last week’s PGA TOUR event in Alabama.
Hensby, who has been out of the game with injuries and struggling to find his way back, will tee up in this week’s RBC Canadian Open thanks to his surprise top-10 finish at the Barbasol Championship last week.
The 42-year-old, who won the John Deere Classic in 2004, last played a PGA TOUR event in 2013 but was eligible for last week’s opposite field tournament because of his past winner’s status.
He will now be looking to capitalise on the opportunity by parlaying this week’s start into another good week as he tries to return to the game’s highest levels.
Having played on the 2005 Presidents Cup team and finishing T5 at that year’s US Masters a car accident derailed Hensby’s career in 2006.
After recovering from that setback he had shoulder problems which required surgery but despite being healthy the past two years and attempting to come back to the game via Q-School he has been unable to secure full time playing privileges.
Another good result this week would be a huge step on the road back however this week’s field is a step up in class from last week.
Several of the stars who teed up at last week’s Open return to the Tour including our own Jason Day who was agonisingly close to the play-off at St Andrews.
Though fatigue is a potential issue Day will be among the favourites in Canada after a brilliant performance at the Old Course.
The 27-year-old was impressive in all departments, making just three bogeys for the week, and two of those in the near unplayable conditions of Saturday morning’s restart, was extraordinary.
Day and Hensby are joined in the field by Matt Jones, who also played well at St Andrews, Aaron Baddeley, Cameron Percy, Robert Allenby and amateur star Ryan Ruffels.
Baddeley comes into the week off a top-10 of his own at last week’s Barbasol while Percy will be fresh from a week break.
Ruffels, believed by many to be a superstar in waiting, is in the US for some of the big amateur evens of the northern summer and will tee up courtesy of a sponsor’s invite.
