Matt Griffin has taken top honours at the Top Cup Tokai Classic in Japan in a difficult week for the Australasian contingent.
With the season’s top performers of Michael Hendry, Brad Kennedy and Brendan Jones electing to sit the week out, Griffin played solid golf to finish 5-under-par for the four rounds and T23.
Five Australasians teed up in the event, Griffin the only one to finish in red figures for the week.
Scott Strange finished 1-over and T47 while Won Joon Lee endured a horror third round 82 to tumble down the leaderboard, eventually finishing T67.
Both David Smail and Kurt Barnes struggled from the outset, neither breaking 80 in the opening round on their way to missing the weekend.
Just one event remains before a run of several of the Tour’s biggest tournaments to close out the season, the Japan Open kicking things off in a fortnight’s time.
Both Michael Hendry and Brad Kennedy will have an eye on finishing top Australasian on the Tour’s money list as they sit fifth and eighth respectively.
Hideto Tanihara is all but uncatchable at the top of the list but just $142,000 separates Hendry and Kennedy in the race for local honours.
