Goss and Smith get Pebble opportunity

Cameron Smith will be looking to put the disappointment of a missed cut last week behind him when he joins rookie Professional Oliver Goss as a sponsor’s invite at this week’s AT&T event at Pebble Beach.

"CameronSmith has received several
sponsor’s exemptions since playing his first PGA TOUR event last year where he
earned a start thanks to a top-5 finish at the co-sanctioned CIMB Malaysia
tournament.

One of the most promising
young Australian players in the game, Smith is yet to find his best stuff in
the US but the iconic Pebble Beach tournament could prove the turning point.

The celebrity pro-am format
isn’t the favourite of many top players which means the field isn’t one of the
strongest of the season providing an excellent opportunity for the likes of
Smith and Goss.

Goss, who came to prominence
when winning on the PGA Tour of Australasia as an amateur in 2012, is playing
his first full year as a Professional having secured a card on the secondary
Web.com Tour.

He has played two events so
far with a missed cut and T12 result to show for it but, like Smith, is an
immense talent who is capable of winning at TOUR level once he finds his feet.

The young guns are among 12
Australians who will tee up at Pebble Beach, a venue that has produced only two
Australian winners in its more than 70 year history, Brett Ogle the last in
1993.

Bruce Crampton also won what
was then known as the Crosby Clambake in 1965 beating ‘Champagne’ Tony Lema by
three shots.

Stuart Appleby, Aaron
Baddeley, Steven Bowditch, Greg Chalmers, Jason Day, Scott Gardiner, Nathan Green,
Matt Jones, Rod Pampling and Cameron Percy join Smith and Goss in this year’s
field.

Last week’s winner Day has
been consistent at Pebble Beach in his five appearances with a pair of 6th
place finishes his best.

He was two shots out of a
play-off in 2008 and four shots behind 2013 winner Brandt Snedeker so has
experience at the pointy end of the tournament.

Fatigue is always a factor
after a tournament victory and perhaps more so after a gruelling play-off
Sunday at Torrey Pines but there is no doubt the World No 4 will like his
chances come Thursday.

Of the rest only Aaron
Baddeley has had a top-5 finish at this event, a 4th placing in 2012
his best in seven appearances.

Scott Gardiner’s best result
of a miserable 2014 season came here when he was T13 and he will be hoping to
emulate that this week.
