The result won’t grab a lot of headlines but Scott Gardiner’s comeback from a long standing elbow injury took a big step forward this week when he made his first cut in 12 months.
Gardiner posted rounds of 71-71-72-74 to finish even par and T58 at the Web.com Tour’s El Bosque Championship in Mexico.
It was at this tournament, 12 months ago, that Gardiner last played all four rounds in a tournament with the New South Welshman playing just eight events in the intervening year.
Gardiner played three times for three missed cuts on the PGA TOUR last season and hung up the clubs for the year after the Web.com’s BMW Charity event in May.
He returned to the secondary Tour in 2016 and played three times in the lead up to this week’s event in Mexico but failed to make the weekend on any occasion.
However, his first two sub par scores for the year saw him comfortably make the cut this week and while his weekend play wasn’t what he would have wanted it was an encouraging week all the same.
Gardiner was one of only two Australians to play all 72 holes after eight began the week Thursday.
Victoria’s Steve Allan was the other to make the cut, finishing a shot behind Gardiner and T61.
Less pleased with their weeks’ work will be Bryden Macpherson, Brett Drewitt, Adam Crawford, Oliver Goss, Peter Lonard and Mathew Goggin.
All finished well outside the cut line, Brett Drewitt the nearest at 2-over though 36 holes with the cut coming at 1-under.
