Marcus Fraser not only finished top
Australian at the European Tour’s BMW International Open he made up a little
ground on Scott Hend in the race to represent Australia at the Rio Olympics.
Hend’s victory on the Asian Tour last week
leapfrogged him over Fraser in the Official World Golf Rankings and he is
likely to remain there despite missing the cut in Germany.
But with two more events before the cut off
for qualification, the pair are locked in a fascinating battle with just six
places separating them in the World Rankings at the start of the week.
Fraser is projected to pick up one spot on
Hend after a week which saw him finish T21 after rounds of 69-72-70-72 at the
Golf Club Gut Laerchenhof.
Fraser was one of only two Australians to
make the cut in a week where bad weather forced the cancellation of the third
round when the course became flooded.
Nick Cullen, who earned his place in the
field with a top-10 finish in Austria the week prior to the US Open, found the
going tough on the 36 hole final day with back to back rounds of 75 seeing him
fall down the leaderboard.
Cullen was mid-field after two rounds but
couldn’t build any momentum in the final two rounds and eventually finished
T59.
Australian PGA champion Nathan Holman
finished just one shot outside the cut line, one of seven Australians to miss
the weekend.
Scott Hend, Richard Green, Brett Rumford,
Jordan Zunic, Jason Scrivener and Andrew Dodt also packed their bags early.
