Adam Scott’s mission to add a second Major to his 2013 Masters jacket takes another step this week when he tees up at the FedEx St Jude Classic for the first time in a decade.
The former World Number 1 revealed last year his 2017 plan included playing the week prior to each of the majors in an effort to both assess, and sharpen, his game.
After an erratic week at The Memorial, the TPC Southwind layout offers Scott a chance to build on the good from Ohio, including a second round 66, while working on eliminating mistakes.
The Queenslander’s only other appearance in Memphis came in 2007 when he led for three rounds before stumbling with a Sunday 75 to fall to 7th.
However, his opening three rounds of 67-66-68 will no doubt see him drawing on good memories as he heads to the first tee Thursday.
Scott is one of seven Australians making a start this week, rookie Curtis Luck making his fifth appearance since turning Professional and joining Cameron Percy, Steven Bowditch, Stuart Appleby, Matt Jones and Brett Drewitt.
Luck made the cut at last week’s Memorial tournament though will be wanting to improve on his play there where he failed to break 70 in any of the four rounds on his way to a T73 finish.
The West Australian has shown he has the game to compete at the highest level, making the cut in Ohio despite an opening round 77 testament to his determination and talent.
Luck has made the cut in three of the four tournaments he has played on the PGA TOUR and has plenty of motivation to play well as he is allowed only two further sponsor exemptions as a non-member of the TOUR.
Also playing with next year in mind are Matt Jones and Cameron Percy, both former PGA TOUR members trying to earn their way back to full status.
Percy comes to Memphis after an extraordinary Sunday round on the Web.com Tour where he made just one par on the front nine among six birdies and two bogeys.
2017 marks his sixth appearance at the FedEx St Jude tournament where he has missed just one cut and has a best result of T18 in 2015.
Matt Jones, too, has some fond memories of the TPC Southwind course where he missed his first three cuts but finished T3 in his fourth appearance in 2015.
A T26 result last year suggests he is now more comfortable on the course and at 137th in FedEx Cup points, and needing to be top-125 by season’s end to get back on the Tour, this week is an important one.
Veteran Stuart Appleby is also trying to play his way back to the PGA TOUR but is faring less well with seven missed cuts and a WD in nine starts this year.
He has been a regular at TPC Southwind though with mixed results, his best finish coming in his first appearance when T16 in 1996.
He has made the cut here in each of the past four years and after a solid performance to be T39 at the Web.com Tour event last week comes to Memphis with decent form.
Brett Drewitt makes his debut at the tournament while Steven Bowditch continues his attempt to get his game back on track in what has proved another difficult season.
