Matt Jones is using his local knowledge to his
advantage at the Emirates Australian Open.
A
member of The Australian Golf Club, Jones has played this course countless
times and his experience is shining through as he leads the Emirates Australian
Open by three shots after two rounds.
A winner on the PGA TOUR, Jones has never won a PGA Tour of Australasia
tournament but is off to a good start to change that this week.
Sitting three shots adrift of Jones is rookie Professional Todd Sinnott, who
found himself in a similar position after two rounds last year as an amateur
but faded over the last two days.
Having spent this year competing in Europe, Sinnott believes he is a more
experienced player and is confident he will be able to keep a large number off
his card this weekend.
Sitting a further shot back on 3-under the card is a group of five players
featuring some big names including World Number 1 Jordan Spieth, Geoff Ogilvy,
Nicolas Colsaerts, Aron Price and round one leader, Lincoln Tighe.
Recent PGA TOUR graduate Rhein Gibson is 2-under the card after a solid 3-under
68 today. He is chasing his second start in The Open with the top-3 players not
already exempt this week earning a berth.
Rounding out the top-10 on 1-under the card are John Senden, Brett Rankin,
Richard Green, Stephen Dartnall, and Daniel Pearce.
The second round cut was made at 4-over the card with 65 Professionals and four
amateurs making the weekend rounds.
The third round of the Emirates Australian Open will tee off at 7.19am with the
lead group of Matthew Jones and Todd Sinnott on course at 12.45pm.

Key Quotes:
Matt Jones, 67, 68,
7-under, 1st
"I do know the golf course; I’m comfortable with lines off the tees. The
greens are completely different to what I grew up on here, different grass, a
lot of different breaks."
"I do have local knowledge and it’ll be fun to be out there on the weekend with
a lot of friends and family and members from this course out there."
"I mean, of course I’ve thought about it but it would be fantastic. Any
time you have a chance to win your own country’s Open, would be
fantastic."
"But, two days to go, I can’t really be thinking about that now. I’ll be
thinking about that if I have a chance coming down the stretch on Sunday."
Todd Sinnott, 68,
70, 4-under, 2nd
"It’s pretty cool. I suppose I’m young, but Spieth’s younger, and
watching what Spieth did this year winning two Majors and having one of the
best years ever basically, it’s pretty cool to be playing alongside him.
Hopefully I’ll be competing against him over the last couple of days."
"I’m more experienced now; I’ve dealt with last year here where I had a bad
last round, so I sort of know what to expect on the last couple of days being
in the last couple of groups. I’ll hopefully give it a good shake in the next
couple of days."
"Probably a little bit more mature and a little bit more comfortable in bigger
situations I suppose, but I’m still learning and I’ll keep learning."
Nicolas Colsaerts,
73, 66, 3-under, T3
"I wasted so many shots yesterday. I made a couple of bogies when I only had a
100 metres in. I’m afraid you just can’t do that but today was
good. I played pretty much the same and just holed a few more."
"If I keep putting like I did today, yeah, I think I’m going to be there but
it’s a high quality field. I don’t know how many players are up
there. We’ll see what happens today but yeah, I obviously would like to
keep playing like this because it’s quite enjoyable for us."
Jordan Spieth, 71,
68, 3-under, T3
"Right now I think the goal is going to be to try and shoot 10-under on the
weekend and I think that should be good enough."
"I like the challenge of chasing but not being too far away, knowing that you
can maybe go out ahead and put just a bit of pressure on. Maybe they hear
the noise, the roars, if you can generate some."
Adam Scott, 71, 73,
2-over, T34
"Yesterday was tiring. This is my sixth event out of the last eight weeks and
getting out of bed at four o’clock this morning, I wasn’t springing out of bed
and then I just misjudged the pace of the greens for most of the day."
"I just couldn’t get myself to hit the putt hard enough and when the greens
slow down I tend to struggle and I did again today."
