A scorching final round 9-under-par 62 at the Barbasol Championship has provided a late season boost for PGA TOUR rookie Brett Drewitt.
The 10 birdie-one bogey effort jumped Drewitt to T27 in the event but more importantly moved him nine places up the FedEx Cup standings.
Drewitt, who graduated from the secondary Web.com Tour last year, was 199th to start the week but needs to remain in the top-200 to have a second chance at the upcoming four tournament Web.com finals Series.
His good play at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s National course in Alabama moved him to 190th and while not a guaranteed starter in the Finals yet, his prospects look considerably brighter than at the start of the week.
Drewitt was one of seven Australians in this week’s field and one of only three to play all four days with Cameron Percy the pick three shots ahead of Drewitt and T12.
Like Drewitt, Percy’s 2018 status is not yet clear as he fights to win back a full card to the PGA TOUR for 2018.
Percy entered the final round in a share of sixth position and showed great poise to overcome a horror start and shoot a 2-under 69 on Sunday.
He moved from 135th on the FedEx Cup to 132nd as he tries to claw his way into the top-125 and ensure a full schedule next season.
At 4-over through four holes he looked in considerable trouble but closed out the front-9 with two birdies then added another five against a solo bogey on the inward half.
Robert Allenby was also a starter in the event and opened with an encouraging 66 to be T5 after 18 holes.
However, an even par 71 on day two on a low scoring course saw him slip down the standings and he did well to fight back with weekend rounds of 67-68 to ultimately finish T27 alongsdie Drewitt.
Stuart Appleby missed the second cut put in place Saturday after more than 80 players qualified for the weekend while Matt Jones, Mark Hensby and Steven Bowditch all missed the 36-hole cut.
