Docking’s 2-under par round of 69 included five birdies, though his lead could have even been greater if it wasn’t for dropped shots late in his round.

Vernon Sexton-Finck finds himself in second position, while Steven Myers and Tod Power are a further shot back in a tie for third.

Apart from the late blemishes, Docking was happy with the start to his title defence.

"I played really good out there today. I hit plenty of quality golf shots and although it could have been better, it’s still a great start to the week," said Docking.

"The Hamilton Island course is in great shape, rewarding players that are hitting quality shots. Today was no doubt the start that I was looking for. If I can continue to hole some putts over the two days, I am sure I will be in a position to contend over the closing holes on Thursday."

Vernon Sexton-Finck kept himself in touch with Docking with a round of 70, though his highlight for the day was no doubt his hole-in-one at the 160 metre par three 16th, with a perfectly executed eight iron. Not to be outdone,

New South Welshman David Fearns also made an ace at the 161 metre par three 4th hole. Fearns also hit an eight iron to record what was to be the perfect birthday present.

Playing alongside the 50 PGA Professionals over the opening two rounds are 52 amateurs, all vying for the coveted Hamilton Island Amateur Golf Championship.

Andrew Edwards and Peter Woolcock lead the way on 39 points, though with 11 players within four shots of the leaders, tomorrow’s final round will no doubt come down to the final few holes.

Tomorrow’s second round begins at 7:45am with the group including Docking teeing off at 8:25am.
