Day inching back to his best

Jason Day continues his steady climb back to his best with a T11 finish at the WGC HSBC Championship tournament in China.

Jason Day continues his steady climb back to his best with a T11 finish at the WGC HSBC Championship tournament in China.

""The former World Number 1 bolted home Sunday with a 4-under 68 at the Sheshan Golf Club to get to 5-under and jump 22 places up the leaderboard on a difficult day for scoring.

Only two players produced a lower final round, eventual winner Justin Rose and American Phil Mickelson, testament to the quality of the Queenslander’s play.

Day will take plenty of confidence from his sub 70 scores in both the opening and closing rounds while rueing some missed opportunities on days two and three.

His Friday round of 74 was particularly disappointing, dropped shots at each of the course’s back-9 par-5s a frustrating way to finish.

However, in a year which has seen the 2015 PGA winner struggle for consistency it was a more balanced performance in China and one that he will be keen to build on as he prepares to head home for the Emirates Australian Open.

While Day will leave China with positives to reflect on it was a less fruitful journey for the remaining Australasians in the field.

Marc Leishman finished next best on the leaderboard at 1-over for the week which was a decent fightback after a disastrous second round.

Leishman amassed 79 strokes Friday, most of the damage done in three holes with two double bogeys and a triple, to end his week almost before it began.

After his recent run of form, including making a playoff against Justin Thomas in Korea the previous week, it was an inexplicable lapse though backing up with rounds of 68-71 was more in line with his recent play.

Much of the rest of the Australasian contingent found the going tough Sunday, Ryan Fox struggling to a 4-over 76 on his way to a T46 finish while Adam Scott signed for a 74 to be T50.

Scott Hend blew out to a 77 Sunday after decent opening rounds of 68-71, his weekend scores of 78-77 proving costly as he tumbled down the leaderboard to an eventual T62 finish.

Michael Hendry never really found his groove on his way to finishing T65 for the week while Matthew Griffin will be bitterly disappointed with his T67 result after a promising start.

The Japan Tour regular was the leading Australian after an opening 68 but added two 77s and a 74 to finish near the tail of the field.

Ash Hall (74th) and Andrew Dodt (75th) rounded out the Australian challenge, neither having anything like their best form for the week.
