After the disappointment of a missed cut when defending at Torrey Pines two weeks ago a fully fit Jason Day heads an 11 strong Australian contingent at this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Day, whose entire family was felled by a flu the week of the Torrey Pines event, told a local newspaper last week has been in the area for more than a week practising and should be ready to go come Thursday.
The World Number Three told a local newspaper last week the time spent on the Monterey Peninsula had been good for him and the entire Day clan.
"We had a really bad bug go through the family; there was five of us sick," he said.
"We needed the time this week to rest up and recover."
While he has played little golf since last year’s Tour Championship Day will begin this week with plenty of confidence after a Top-5 finish here last year.
The tournament uses three courses, the iconic Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula Country Club.
It was at the latter that Day shot a stunning 10-under 62 in last year’s second round, eventually going on to finish T4.
It was his third Top-10 in six appearances at a venue that he clearly likes though lack of recent competitive play might work against him this week.
The full contingent of Australians in the field is: Day, Geoff Ogilvy, Jarrod Lyle, Cameron Smith, Rod Pampling, Cameron Percy, Aaron Baddeley, Matt Jones, Steven Bowditch, Rhein Gibson and rookie, Ryan Ruffels.
Baddeley will be hoping last week’s missed cut in Arizona, after a good run of form in the lead up, was just a blip and with two Top-10’s at Pebble Beach in recent years he has some good memories to draw on.
Matt Jones, too, will be keen to get going this week after a Top-10 finish here last year. The reigning Australian Open champion has played some decent golf in his last three events but hasn’t quite hit top form.
With only one missed cut in eight appearances at Pebble Beach, and with some competitive golf now under his belt, he could be dangerous this week,
Teen sensation Ryan Ruffels is the other Australian who will attract interest this week as he tees up on the PGA TOUR for the second time after a successful debut at Torrey Pines.
The 17-year-old made the cut two weeks ago despite some of the worst conditions the TOUR has seen in recent years.
Ruffels, who was born in California before moving to Australia, is familiar with the course and while a win might be too bold a prediction it would be no surprise to see him make the cut.
For the rest the week is an important one as none have shown much form in the early part of the new season.
Jarrod Lyle has had little joy in his efforts to regain his TOUR card and with just six events remaining on his medical extension will be motivated this week.
The Victorian needs to amass a little over $200,000 to get back to the TOUR and a good finish this week would be a healthy start.
Rhein Gibson, too, has struggled since earning his card via the Web.com Tour last year and with just one made cut in seven starts so far needs to find some form quickly.
Rod Pampling is in a similar position to Gibson though has played only four times since the new season kicked off for two missed cuts, one withdrawal and a T49 at the Carer Builder Challenge.
Geoff Ogilvy makes his sixth appearance at Pebble Beach though has had limited success, four missed cuts and a T25 not a reflection of his best golf.
The two Camerons, Percy and Smith, are also in the field, the former playing on limited status this season while the latter tries to overcome a disappointing debut.
After playing brilliantly to earn his place on the TOUR Smith has struggled to find his feet, four missed cuts from seven starts and a best of T37 not up to his talent and expectations.
The more relaxed atmosphere of the pro-am format may be to his liking this week and he is due to find some form soon.
