Jason Day has held on to his lead at THE PLAYERS on a day
that wrecked havoc on the best players in the world.
With the greens at TPC Sawgrass playing super fast the
scores in the third round reflected the challenge. Just six players were able
to break par.
"The green speeds kind of took me by surprise. It was just
such a drastic change from Thursday to Friday to now, this afternoon," said
Day.
"The front nine was a bit border line in my honest opinion; I think a lot of
the players probably think that, as well."
"I think they said it was 71, the scoring average yesterday,
and 76 today or something like that, which is just unbelievable."
Day who usually loves a challenge, fired 1-over 73 in a
round he described as the hardest of his life.
"I want to say this was the toughest day I’ve ever had to
play in my life," added Day.
"I’ve never played golf where I’m trying to lag 10-foot
putts just to get around the hole. Usually I’m my mentality is trying to hole
all the putts; if I can get on the green, I’m holing everything. But a 10-foot
putt felt like it was 60 feet away just to try and get it that close. It was
difficult."
"There are obviously no excuses in this game, because you have
to go out and earn wins, but it was just a little tough on us today."
"But it is what it is. Everyone’s got to face it the same
way."
Only 16 players escaped the round without at least a
double bogey or worse on their card. The crowd tried to save Day but he managed
to rack up two doubles on the front-9.
"The 6th caught me off guard. I hit it to 20 feet and ended
up four-putting," said Day.
"I heard the crowd, I was walking over and they said, it’s
fast, it’s fast, it’s fast, they’re yelling at me."
"Usually when you hear it you don’t listen to them. I hit
the putt, and it was fast, and I ended up making a mess."
However the back-9 was far friendlier to Day and he was able
to make two birdies to ensure he retains his four shot lead heading into the
final round.
"To have two doubles on the front side and then play some
nice golf on the back side to really kind of keep that distance between me and
the rest of the guys was nice."
"But I’m really hoping they slow the greens down tomorrow."
