Jason Day produced some final round fireworks while Steven Bowditch continued to build on the theme of consistency he developed in 2015 as the first event of the 2016 PGA TOUR finished in Hawaii.

Day, who decimated the Plantation Course in Kapalua last year with a final round 11-under 61, almost repeated the same feat today, eventually signing for an 8-under 65 and a share of 10th position.

Having not played a four round stroke play tournament since September last year, and no competitive golf since October, Day showed signs of rust over the first three days but found his groove early on Sunday.

A birdie at the third was followed by an outrageous eagle putt of some 75 feet at the fifth, the long bomb seemingly awakening Day who made two more birdies before the turn and a further three on the back nine.

While he started the day an insurmountable 17 shots behind leader Jordan Spieth, the low final round will be a big confidence boost for Day as he prepares to back up his best season as a Professional in 2016.

Bowditch, meanwhile, was rock solid over the first three days with rounds of 69-67-69 to be 14-under with one round to play.

While disappointed to finish with a 1-under-par round, including two late bogies on Sunday, it was another encouraging week for the two time TOUR winner as he continues to perform at the highest levels.

Historically a streaky player, Bowditch has worked hard on his fitness the past 12 months and the effort is paying dividends as he maintains more consistent form on a week to week basis.

Bowditch will remain in Hawaii for next week’s Sony Open while Day has elected not to tee up at Waialae Country Club.
