After playing his way into The Open at St Andrews with a good finish at the Travelers Steven Bowditch heads a small Australian contingent into this week’s Greenbrier Classic.
The big hitting Queenslander overcame missed cuts in each of his previous three appearances at TPC River Highlands to finish T15 and with a better record at this week’s host course, the Old White, he appears the best chance of the Australians.
Bowditch finished T2 at this event in 2013 after opening with a 65 and recording four scores in the 60’s and if he were to produce that again this week would be in the mix come Sunday.
The Greenbrier is a venue that hasn’t been kind to the rest of the Australians teeing up this week with Robert Allenby, Aaron Baddeley, Cameron Percy and Marc Leishman boasting more missed cuts than top 10’s between them.
Baddeley showed some good form at last week’s Travelers opening with three sub par rounds before stumbling on Sunday with a costly 73.
However, there was more to like about the Victorian’s game than not in Connecticut and he will tee off Thursday with some confidence in the way he is playing.
Marc Leishman responded well to a missed cut at the US Open with some solid golf at the Travelers where he finished T39.
Since his wife’s health scare in April he has played with a new found freedom and his opening two rounds at Chambers Bay were somewhat of a surprise.
Leishman said prior to the year’s second major he felt his game was building to something big and despite a less than stellar record at the Greenbrier there is no reason that can’t come this week.
Robert Allenby has been struggling with his game most of the year and there is little to indicate that is likely to change this week.
Allenby comes into the week off his 12th missed cut of the season though did shoot under par here last year for a T26 result.
Cameron Percy is the final Australian in the field and makes his fourth appearance at Greenbrier.
Although disappointing in last week’s final round Percy’s form has been decent in recent weeks and he may improve on his previous best here of T30 which came in 2013.
Greg Chalmers is listed as first alternate for the event and may yet find his way into the field.
